Uniontrack’s Engage App

Uniontrack’s Engage is a first-to-market software app designed to help labor unions reduce day-to-day operating expenses and solve important workflow issues. It combines the best union dues payment software, union membership communication software, and grievance tracking software into a web-based system.

After 15 years of supporting labor, the folks at Uniontrack discovered that labor unions had a separate system for everything. There was a system for dues, for managing the membership, for communicating, for pensions, for grievances. But, Uniontrack’s Engage app combines all of these systems into one place. No matter which system was needed, or the role or responsibility, or whether in the field or at the office, Uniontrack’s Engage maintains the most up-to-date information in real-time at the tip of a finger.

Ken Green, the CEO of Uniontrack, guested on the podcast and told me about the Engage app that he and his company created and developed. In this clip, Ken highlights how Uniontrack’s Engage can behave as a mobile desktop when you’re out in the field without your desk:

The Union-Friendly App

Uniontrack’s Engage is a union-friendly app. Labor unions can customize the app’s features to complement their respective union’s colors, logos, fonts, and designs. Individual members can set up and automatically pay dues, or sign-up for training, or participate in surveys. Organizers can collect and deliver data on organizing campaigns. Labor unions and members can communicate bi-directionally, meaning they can upload or view documents via the “digital document library.” Members can make voluntary contributions to the union’s PAC fund or participate in calls to action.

Engage features can be defined by roles, so someone with fiduciary responsibilities may not need to communicate directly with members whereas a political director may want to engage a member in a civic, legislative, or political issue. Uniontrack offers 30-minute introductory classes with demonstrations and Q&A that are broken into targeted courses for specific functions or responsibilities.

Instead of downloads or plug-ins, the app uses push technology. It sends an invitation to an email address or as an SMS message through text message. Smartphone users can leverage QR codes to simply point and get connected.

According to a 2020 Gallup poll, 75% of millennials and Gen Z favor labor unions. They also embrace technology. The coronavirus pandemic has only accelerated this new standard of reliance on technology. Change is hard, but if the labor movement wants to capture this next generation of labor organizers and members, then it’s time we take advantage of technology and reframe the conversation for this generation of workers.
